The captains talked about the peculiarities of the sailor`s profession

Members of the Far Eastern Association of Sea Captains, the Russian Seafarers` Union have begun to hold meetings with cadets of shipboard specialties at ANMSU to introduce them to the modern realities of marine life. Today, graduates of the Maritime University work both on the ships of Russian shipowners and in foreign companies. This means that it is important not only to master the profession, but also to have a good knowledge of the maritime language - English. Risk is an integral part of the seafarer`s profession. And that`s why we say: the sea is for strong, strong-willed and courageous people. And we tell future sailors how important it is to be not only strong and courageous, but also responsible in the performance of their official duties. Why, in the age of technical achievements, the triumph of new technologies, tremendous successes in space navigation, ships continue to collide, burn, run aground or perish, unable to withstand the collision with the merciless sea element? this is due to the lack of responsibility of some seafarers. Pavel Mushnyaga, who has worked on foreign ships for more than one year, spoke about the pros and cons of a flag of convenience. He was lucky - he had very good, responsible shipowners and had no problems with salaries. But this does not mean that such problems do not exist and here it is important to be able to defend your rights correctly and competently. And for this you need not only to know well the maritime and labor law, but also to be a member of the Russian maritime trade union, which, in turn, is a collective member of the international maritime trade union - ITF. It is important to remember that the 2006 ILO Convention «On Labor in Maritime Navigation», the Merchant Shipping Code of the Russian Federation, the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, and other regulatory documents reliably protect the rights of seafarers. We tell the cadets about the women at sea. The sea captain Tatiana Sukhanova told about how difficult it is for them to work at sea. Since 2010, when the Manila Amendments to the STCW Convention were adopted, the flow of girls to maritime education has increased dramatically. Vyacheslav Smelov, a former captain-director on board ships of the fishing fleet, spoke about how the fate of the graduates of the Maritime University after the end of their maritime career is developing. He has been working as a pilot in the commercial port of Vladivostok for several years. Many ANMSU alumni such as Nikolay Cheptsov, Valery Dobrokvashin and many others now teach at maritime educational institutions. Both the Captains` Association and the Russian Seafarers` Union will continue the project Introduction to the Profession. We have something to tell the young generation of future sailors.

P.I. Osichansky, President of the Far Eastern Association of Sea Captains, Chairman of the Trade Union Committee of Seamen of Vladivostok
