On the Maritime Day students cleaned the coast of Fedorov Bay from garbage

September 24 is World Maritime Day, initiated in 1978 by the decision of the Tenth Assembly of the Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organization. On that day, students of the Faculty of Environmental Safety and Shelf Development held an annual garbage collection campaign on the territory of Fedorov Bay. The problem of pollution of the marine environment with garbage occupies one of the main places in a number of environmental issues. Organization of events for cleaning the coast from garbage is called ICC (International Coast Cleanup). The coastal line accumulates debris floating on the sea surface. Monitoring allows to clarify the structure of polluting materials, dynamics of pollution intensity, as well as to identify the main sources of pollution. During the action, students collected garbage on a 245 m² section of the coastline with further sorting and weighing of garbage, and entered the data into an approved form for further transfer to the international database. Every year, during such campaigns, plastic waste takes the lead in terms of the amount of collected material, mainly packaging from products and a large number of cigarette filters. This year, during the action, construction waste in the form of bricks and parts of reinforced concrete structures washed ashore was noted, which is apparently caused by the recent typhoon.
