How a graduate of the Marine College became the «father» of Captain Vrungel

November 14, 2020 marks the 130th anniversary of the founding of the G.I. Nevelskoy MSU. The anniversary date always makes you take a closer look at some facts in the history of maritime education in the Far East. It just so happened that the 20-30s of the last century turned out to be a kind of historical «blank spot», especially scanty are the data on the graduates of this difficult period in the life of the former Aleksandrovsky Nautical School of Long-Range Navigation, which became a Marine College in Soviet times. We invite you to get acquainted with one of the famous graduates of the Vladivostok Marine College, marine writer Andrey Nekrasov. The name of the writer Andrei Nekrasov, as our graduate, sounded in a conversation between Professor Sergei Ogai and a veteran of the University, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Anatoly Azovtsev. The latter said that as a boy in the Siberian city of Omsk he read the book Captain Vrungel’s Adventures. It was said in the preface to the story that the author graduated from the Marine College in Vladivostok. The book so captivated him with sea romance that after graduating from school he entered the Navigation Faculty of the Vladivostok Higher Maritime School. However, the fact that A.S. Nekrasov graduated from the Marine College, remained unconfirmed by documents. In 2019, the Russian State Archives of Literature and Art reported that in 1933 A.S. Nekrasov passed exams for the Marine College as an external student. Andrey Nekrasov is a representative of a rare galaxy of writers, whose personal fame cannot even be compared with the worldwide popularity of his book about Captain Vrungel. The book is always read to rags in all libraries, it is reprinted several times a year in different countries and in different languages. It is hard to imagine for how many thousands of boys in our country, and abroad, this work, full of funny sea tales and educational facts, opened the way to the sea. The author of the book wrote it for children, but with such humor and subtle knowledge of maritime affairs, with such a vital truth about the difficult and romantic profession of a sailor, that adults are still reading it with pleasure. You can write a real adventure novel about the author himself, who spent many years working in the fleet. He sailed on a variety of ships as an ordinary sailor and a stoker in the North and the Far East. It was personal experience that made it possible to write a fascinating book about Captain Vrungel's voyage around the world. Nekrasov was devoted to the sea and would have continued to work as a navigator in the fleet, if it had not been for a serious illness. He returned to Moscow, deciding to become a professional writer. A.S. Nekrasov was a victim of political repressions and was subsequently fully rehabilitated. And in 1958 his dream came true - 200,000 copies of «Captain Vrungel’s Adventures» were reprinted with the most amusing «nautical glossary». And then the popularity of the story was increased by the feature film «The New Adventures of Captain Vrungel «, then the animated series was released. In the 90s of the last century, after the death of the writer on February 15, 1987, Vrungel was published with a record circulation of 2 million copies. The story has been translated into English, Armenian, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Georgian, Turkmen and Uzbek, Japanese and many other languages. The name of Captain Vrungel was adapted according to national characteristics: in Poland he turned into Captain Zalganov, in the Czech Republic - into Captain Zhvanilkin, in Germany - into Captain Flunkerich ... And as Christopher Bonifatievich Vrungel used to say: «There are no bad ships, there are no bad winds, there are bad captains.» So the writer Andrei Nekrasov showed himself to be a good captain in the sea of adventure books, which both young and old are still happy to read.
