200 years since the discovery of Antarctica: the contribution of the Far-Easterners to the study of the continent

A round table dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica by Russian seafarers F.F. Bellingshausen and M.P. Lazarev in the years 1820-1821 and the Year of Antarctica in Russia took place at the Nevelskoy MSU. The guests who thad had the opportunity to get acquainted with the harsh nature of the ice continent were present at the meeting. The cadets, teachers and staff of Nevelskoy MSU learned some unique facts told by participants in expeditions to the shores of Antarctica, which you will not read in any book. The head of the center for patriotic education, Marina Kameneva, introduced the audience to the guests: sea captain Gennady Antokhin, candidate of geographical sciences, research associate of the Institute of Geography, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Pavel Belyanin, Chairman of the Primorsky Branch of the All-Russian Fleet Support Movement Nikolai Minakov, journalist, editor of Novaya Gazeta in Vladivostok ”Andrei Ostrovsky, head of the Department of Ship Navigation, Makarov TOVVMU, Mikhail Sazhaev, doctor of technical sciences, professor, full member of the Russian Geographical Society, honorary member of the Society for the Study of the Amur Region Vladimir Verevkin, candidate of technical sciences, professor, full member of the Russian Geographical Society, honorary member of the Society for the Study of the Amur Region Leonid Lysenko, captains of the Vladivostok Sea Assembly Alexander Putyatin and Oleg Matveev. 2020 is declared the year of Antarctica in Russia. 200 years ago, the Russian Antarctic military scientific expedition of the Vostok and Mirny sloops was a complete success, becoming the second (after James Cook), which went around the entire Antarctic. The expedition stayed in latitudes above 60 ° S. for 127 days; the crew approached the shores of Antarctica nine times. The discovery of the sixth continent completed the era of great geographical discoveries. Marina Kameneva presented the Nevelskoy MSU Museum exhibits: a stone from Antarctica and a model of the flagship of the first Antarctic expedition - the diesel electric ship Ob. The round table continued with an open discussion on the history of the discovery and exploration of Antarctica, the current state of Russian Antarctic stations and their livelihoods, navigation in the Arctic, the ecology and paleography of the continent, international jurisdiction and cooperation. A few fragments of the documentary film Russian Antarctica XXI Century were shown. Mikhail Sazhaev, head of the TOVVMU Navigation Department, made a presentation that said that within the framework of the Antarctic year, two oceanographic research vessels Admiral Vladimirsky and Yantar are conducting research in the Antarctic waters. Nikolai Minakov, Chairman of the Primorsky Branch of the All-Russian Fleet Support Movement, told the roundtable participants about the contribution of the All-Russian Fleet Support Movement to the organization of the celebration of the Year of Antarctica in Russia. The sea captain Gennady Antokhin, a participant in the 1985 epic of rescuing by the Vladivostok icebreaker under his command, the diesel electric ship Mikhail Somov stuck in the ice of the Sea of Ross, spoke about the conditions under which five permanent Russian research stations operate in Antarctica, how they are supplied, what are the conditions for navigation in Antarctic waters and how they differ from navigation in the Arctic. Antarctica today is a unique zone of international cooperation, where the polar scientific stations of very many countries are adjacent.
